Get Rid of Your Hazardous Waste Properly, Nov 2-3

Here’s your chance to get rid of those old, nasty, cleaning products, stuff in aerosol cans, old gasoline, brake fluid and antifreeze, garden chemical fertilizers, disposable batteries and old florescent light bulbs.

Door County has a geographical burden to dispose of hazardous waste properly, keeping it out of landfills. Because of our quite permeable limestone substrata and minimal topsoil, hazardous waste materials are likely to migrate quickly into the water table below unless they are disposed of correctly. Here’s two chances to do so:

  • On Friday, November 2 at the Liberty Grove Fire Station (2258 Mill Road) in Sister Bay from 3:30 to 5:30 pm.

Door County YMCA Launches Freedom from Smoking Classes

In an effort to help smokers improve their quality of life, the Door County YMCA will be launching a smoking cessation program at the Sturgeon Bay center.

The American Lung Association’s “Freedom From Smoking” clinic focuses on evidence based cessation practices in a small group setting. Participants spend seven weeks learning how to overcome tobacco addiction. Topics include preparing for quit-day, lifestyle changes to support quitting, managing stress and staying smoke free for good!

The sessions, led by a Y-instructor who has been certified by the American Lung Association, are offered at two different times. Participants can register for either a morning or evening clinic. The morning clinic meets on Tuesdays (November 6 through December 18) from 10 am to 11:30 am and the evening clinic meets from 4:30 pm to 6 pm. Both clinics, being offered at the YMCA’s Sturgeon Bay Program Center include an additional session on Thursday November 29 for extra support during “Quit Week.”

Addiction to nicotine is a debilitating burden for any individual. Helping a smoker to eliminate tobacco from their life will save money, decrease health risks, improve the environment making breathing easier for everyone including friends and family and boost the individual’s quality of life.
